Egypt, One Road at a Time

"A cruise shows you the river. An overland journey shows you everything in between."

Not every part of Egypt is best seen from the water. An overland trip trades the fixed schedule of a cruise ship for a private vehicle and open road — stopping wherever it's worth stopping, whether that's a lesser-visited tomb in Middle Egypt or a temple a cruise itinerary skips entirely. COMETRA runs four Nile Valley overland routes, from a 9-night classic connecting Cairo to Luxor and Aswan to a 13-night loop covering the length of the valley and back.

What Is an Overland Trip?

An overland trip covers Egypt by road rather than by river or air — a private vehicle, a driver, and a route that can stop anywhere worth stopping, not just at scheduled cruise ports.

COMETRA runs four overland routes, all following the Nile Valley itself, connecting Cairo to Luxor and Aswan by road and rail through Middle Egypt — a region rich in New Kingdom and Amarna-period sites that most cruise itineraries skip entirely, since ships don't stop there.

They range from a 9-night classic linking Cairo, Aswan and Luxor by sleeper train, to a Red Sea-finishing version of the same route, a Middle Egypt-focused itinerary through Beni Hassan and Abydos, and the longest of them all — a 13-night loop that runs the full length of the valley and back to Cairo.

Every route travels in a private, air-conditioned vehicle with an expert guide, and can be extended, shortened, or combined with a Nile cruise or Cairo stay as part of a larger COMETRA itinerary.

How Overland Trips Vary
Route & Terrain
All four routes travel by paved road and, on two of them, an overnight sleeper train between Cairo and Aswan — no off-road sections.
Accommodation Style
Nights are spent in quality hotels throughout, with a sleeper train cabin on the Cairo–Aswan legs of two routes.
Trip Length
Three routes run 9 nights end to end; the Nile Valley Explorer is the longest at 13 nights, looping the full length of the valley back to Cairo.
Best Time to Travel
October to May is ideal across all four routes — cooler daytime temperatures make the long drives and sightseeing far more comfortable.
Budget & Value
Overland travel is genuinely different from a cruise, not simply cheaper or more expensive — COMETRA helps you decide which fits your interests.
