Travel Tips

Accommodation Beyond Cairo & Luxor

Whenever we operate a trip that ventures beyond Egypt's most visited destinations, accommodation standards may differ slightly from those found in Cairo and Luxor. We carefully select the best available family-friendly properties in each location, prioritising cleanliness, comfort and a welcoming experience.

Walking & Accessibility

Some sites involve walking on uneven terrain, sandy paths, rocky surfaces, or stairs. If you normally use a walking cane or other mobility aid, we recommend bringing it with you for added comfort.

Comfort During Visits

During guided visits, there may be times when you will stand while listening to your guide, wait for transportation, or queue at attractions. If standing for extended periods is uncomfortable, we recommend bringing a lightweight foldable chair or informing Cometra in advance so we can assist where possible. We'd also suggest wearing comfortable walking shoes, packing a sun hat, and dressing for the day's activities — especially when visiting sandy or desert areas.

Stay Hydrated

As we spend much of the day exploring, we encourage you to bring a reusable water bottle. Refill stations are available in many locations, helping you stay hydrated while supporting sustainable travel.

Trip Overview

The classic Nile Valley crossing families ask us for most, now with a sleeper train children remember for years and a Red Sea finish to unwind.

The same Nile Valley and Red Sea route COMETRA runs for adult travellers, accommodated for a family pace — two days of Cairo's essential sites, an overnight sleeper train south that turns transit into its own adventure, and a private road journey along the Nile Valley through Kom Ombo to Luxor. Days are shorter than a standard adult itinerary, with real downtime built in and hands-on moments — a camel ride at Giza, a Nubian village visit in Aswan — woven between the temples.

The journey then leaves the Nile Valley for Hurghada, where two nights on the Red Sea give everyone a chance to swap temples for turquoise water before the trip concludes. A private guide experienced with children travels with your family throughout.

Ask a child what they loved most a year later, and it's rarely the temples — it's the night they slept on a moving train.

✦

Trip Highlights

Eight reasons this trip works for every generation on board.

  • Pyramids of Giza & the Sphinx: The trip's opening chapter, with a camel ride across the Giza plateau.
  • Egyptian Museum, Cairo: A family-paced visit to Tutankhamun's treasures and more.
  • Overnight Sleeper Train: A private cabin from Cairo to Aswan — the adventure most children remember first.
  • Philae Temple, Aswan: Reached by a short boat crossing, its own small thrill for younger travellers.
  • Optional Abu Simbel & Nubian Village: Ramesses II's colossal temples, and a daytime visit into a real Nubian community.
  • Kom Ombo Temple: A riverside double temple split between two gods, with a small museum of mummified crocodiles.
  • Karnak & Luxor Temple by Night: Columns scaled to impress every generation, then lit gold after dark.
  • Red Sea Resort, Hurghada: Family snorkelling on shallow reefs, then two easy days to unwind.

Extensions

Egypt has more to offer a family with a few extra days to spend.

Upon request, pre- and post-trip extensions are available to tailor your journey further. Extensions vary based on when and where you start your trip, and when and where you end it.

Before You Depart

Extend your family's time in Cairo before the sleeper train departs with extra time at the Pyramids, the Egyptian Museum, or Islamic Cairo. Let us know your interests and we will tailor the perfect pre-trip experience for you.

Extend Your Trip

Extra nights in Hurghada, or an onward extension to Sharm El Sheikh, can be arranged on request. Contact our team and we will take care of the rest.

Pricing for extensions varies by season, hotel category, and length of stay. Please contact our team at info@cometra.net to discuss possible pre- or post-trip extensions and receive full costing details.

Optional Excursions

A few extra experiences worth adding, if the family has the appetite for them.

This is a standard section included across all Cometra Travel trip plans, featuring excursions available at an additional cost. Your final itinerary may already include one or more of these experiences, depending on the services and arrangements confirmed in your final agreement with Cometra Travel. Any excursion included in your confirmed itinerary will therefore be considered part of your trip, even if it appears in this section.

Prices shown are indicative only and may vary depending on several factors, including the number of participants, season, and the style or level of service selected. For the most accurate pricing and availability, please contact Cometra Travel.

Each excursion includes the associated arrangements and expenses, including private transportation, an expert guide, entrance fees, gratuities, and applicable taxes, unless otherwise specified.

Guide Price: $130 per person

Hot Air Balloon Flight, Luxor (Ages 12+)
Rise before dawn for a hot-air balloon flight over Luxor, ascending gently above the Nile as the first light of day washes the ancient landscape in gold. Snorkeling kit is fitted and checked before the first stop, with the crew on hand throughout for anyone who'd rather stay close to the boat than venture further over the reef. Between stops, relax on deck with soft drinks, tea, coffee and mineral water always on hand, and sit down to a full lunch served on board before the return to harbour — a relaxed, sociable way to see the Red Sea's colour up close.
Guide Price: $50 per person

Scuba Diving, Hurghada (PADI Divers & Beginners)
For certified PADI divers, a two-tank boat dive out to the Red Sea's reef systems, with an experienced dive guide selecting sites suited to the group's certification level and experience. Both options include all equipment, boat transfers and a light lunch on board.
