Travel Tips

Accommodation Beyond Cairo & Luxor

Whenever we operate a trip that ventures beyond Egypt's most visited destinations, accommodation standards may differ slightly from those found in Cairo and Luxor. We carefully select the best available family-friendly properties in each location, prioritising cleanliness, comfort and a welcoming experience.

A Night Aboard the Felucca

One night of this journey is spent camping on the felucca's riverbank rather than in a hotel — a support crew sets up proper bedding and private washroom facilities at each stop, so the experience stays authentic without giving up basic comforts. It's a highlight for most families, but let us know in advance if anyone in your group would prefer a hotel stay instead.

Walking & Accessibility

Some sites involve walking on uneven terrain, sandy paths, rocky surfaces, or stairs. If you normally use a walking cane or other mobility aid, we recommend bringing it with you for added comfort.

Comfort During Visits

During guided visits, there may be times when you will stand while listening to your guide, wait for transportation, or queue at attractions. If standing for extended periods is uncomfortable, we recommend bringing a lightweight foldable chair or informing Cometra in advance so we can assist where possible. We'd also suggest wearing comfortable walking shoes, packing a sun hat, and dressing for the day's activities — especially when visiting sandy or desert areas.

Stay Hydrated

As we spend much of the day exploring, we encourage you to bring a reusable water bottle. Refill stations are available in many locations, helping you stay hydrated while supporting sustainable travel.

Currency & Visa

Egyptian pounds (EGP) are the local currency; USD is widely accepted for tips and some purchases. Most nationalities can obtain an e-visa or visa on arrival — confirm requirements for your passport before travel.

Trip Overview

Ten days of pyramids, temples, a night on a moving train, and a night under the stars on a private felucca — Egypt's classic route, the traditional way.

This is COMETRA's most complete family introduction to Egypt, and its most adventurous. Two days in Cairo cover Saqqara, Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum before an overnight sleeper train carries the family south to Aswan — a private cabin and dinner on board turning transit into an experience in itself. From Aswan, an optional visit to Abu Simbel and an included stop at a Nubian village lead into the journey's signature chapter: a private felucca sail downriver towards Kom Ombo, with a night camping on a quiet riverbank under a sky full of stars. The felucca gives way to the road for the final stretch into Luxor, where three unhurried nights take in Karnak, the Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut's temple. A private guide experienced with children travels with your family throughout.

It's rarely the pyramids the children remember first — it's the night on the felucca, camping under more stars than they've ever seen.

Trip Highlights

Seven reasons this trip works for every generation on board.

  • Saqqara & Giza: The oldest and largest pyramids in Egypt, with a camel ride across the Giza plateau.
  • Grand Egyptian Museum: Tutankhamun's full collection, displayed together for the first time.
  • Overnight Sleeper Train: A private cabin from Cairo to Aswan — the adventure most children remember first.
  • Philae Temple & Unfinished Obelisk: A short boat crossing and an ancient quarry, both a thrill for younger travellers.
  • Nubian Village Visit: An included stop meeting local families and browsing handicrafts, near Aswan.
  • Nile Felucca Sail & Riverbank Camping: A night with no engine, no schedule, and a sky full of stars.
  • Karnak, Valley of the Kings & Hatshepsut Temple: Three of Egypt's grandest monuments, over three unhurried nights in Luxor.

Extensions

Egypt has more to offer a family with a few extra days to spend.

Upon request, pre- and post-trip extensions are available to tailor your journey further. Extensions vary based on when and where you start your trip, and when and where you end it.

Before You Depart

Extend your family's time in Cairo before the felucca adventure begins, with extra time at the Pyramids, the Egyptian Museum, or Islamic Cairo. Let us know your interests and we will tailor the perfect pre-trip experience for you.

Extend Your Trip

After Luxor, extend the adventure with beach time on the Red Sea coast, or a Lake Nasser cruise to Abu Simbel. Contact our team and we will take care of the rest.

Pricing for extensions varies by season, hotel category, and length of stay. Please contact our team at info@cometra.net to discuss possible pre- or post-trip extensions and receive full costing details.

Optional Excursions

A few extra experiences worth adding, if the family has the appetite for them.

This is a standard section included across all Cometra Travel trip plans, featuring excursions available at an additional cost. Your final itinerary may already include one or more of these experiences, depending on the services and arrangements confirmed in your final agreement with Cometra Travel. Each excursion includes the associated arrangements and expenses, including private transportation, an expert guide, entrance fees, gratuities, and applicable taxes, unless otherwise specified.
